According to the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), the favorites European cities for gay people to take vacations are Paris, Berlin and Barcelona. For those who like to visit Latinamerica, IGLTA suggest specially Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil. At the moment, Buenos Aires is catalogued as the “Southamerican Gay Main Spot”, displacing Rio de Janeiro from the throne. From the approval of the Civil Union Law in Buenos Aires city, recognizing the same gender couples rights, the 2002 has turned in a crucial year for the Buenos Aires to win the reputation as heart of the gay tourism in Latin America. Also, the currency devaluation made this place so much attractive for foreign people.
The trendy areas that gay people enjoy to walk around stay or go for shopping are San Telmo, Recoleta and Palermo Soho. “The people come to live the gay experience in Buenos Aires, as a sort of entrance door to the country. Then they travel around Argentina as any tourist as El Calafate, Iguazú Falls, Mendoza and Salta, as the main spots” was declared by Juan Juliá, owner of Axel Hotels. From October 2007, Buenos Aires has the fist luxury hotel aimed at gay clients. The Axel Hotels company had opened the first proyect abroad Spain and states the city as gay friendly destination. After the settlement on Aribau St. in Barcelona, on Eixample neighborhood, inaugurated 6 year ago, there is a second hotel opening in San Telmo area where you´ll find history, bohemian-chic and portenian gay environment, a cosmopolitan and attractive place that stimulates the senses.
